LECTURE 2_Threats to cultural heritage(s) and their mitigation. A sustainable development approach
Creator: Alex Papadopoulos

In this module, we introduce the multi-dimensional threats confronting cultural heritage in the 21st century. It explores how economic, environmental, political, representational, and technological risks intersect to undermine heritage sustainability and equity. Through case studies—from coastal China to Venice and Cape Town—students analyze how governance failures, over-tourism, and climate pressures erode heritage systems. The module foregrounds spatial analysis, participatory governance, and the UN Sustainable Development Goals as essential frameworks for mitigation and resilience, promoting inclusive and future-oriented approaches to cultural heritage protection.

LECTURE 1: Understanding Cultural Heritage Protection - Key Definitions & Concepts
Creator: Alex Papadopoulos, PhD

In our first lecture, we will establish conceptual common ground on the topic of cultural heritage protection and sustainability. Cultural heritage encompasses tangible and intangible elements, each contributing to a society’s identity and historical continuity. Tangible cultural heritage includes physical structures, artifacts, and landscapes that embody artistic, historical, or cultural significance, such as monuments and archaeological sites. In contrast, intangible cultural heritage consists of living traditions, oral histories, rituals, performing arts, and craftsmanship, which are actively transmitted across generations and shape cultural identities. To ensure the survival and integrity of these heritage forms, cultural heritage protection involves legal frameworks, institutional policies, and community-led initiatives to safeguard them from threats such as destruction, commercialization, and cultural erosion. However, adequate protection must also align with sustainability principles, ensuring conservation efforts balance economic development, environmental responsibility, and social inclusion.
